Di Sangue, Latte e Cielo (Of Blood, Milk and Sky)

“Di Sangue, Latte e Cielo” (Of Blood, Milk and Sky) is a long-term photographic project on pastoral cultures, conceived as a book. The Italian chapters, Sardinia and Abruzzo, are complete; Morocco, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Patagonia and Mongolia will follow.

The idea was born in Patagonia, from a smell: a sheep carcass hanging from a branch in a Mapuche settlement. It was the smell of my grandfather’s stable. Working on it, I realised that the story I wanted to tell was his.

My grandfather was a shepherd in Campotosto. His land ended up under water when they built the lake, and with the land went a way of being in the world.

This project starts there, but it does not stay there. It looks for the people who still live with their animals, following the grass and the seasons: in Sardinia and Abruzzo, in the Atlas, in the Caucasus, on the steppes. The blood of animals and of families, the milk that becomes cheese and income and memory, the sky that decides everything: when to leave, when to stay, when to wait.

It is not a work about nostalgia. It is a work about those who are still there.
